Gaba produces a calming effect in the body and is believed to naturally enhance Gaba so it reduces stress and anxiety.

One of the main benefits of using Valerian root is that it is non-addictive, whereas other prescription medications can be. Another helpful benefit is that Valerian root can be purchased at any health food or supplement store at a fraction of the price of prescription drugs. Valerian Root is available in capsule form, tea, tablet or liquid, whichever you prefer, but it is best when taken right before bed so it will take you into a restful sleep. Typically 300 to 600mg is an average dose and drinking a Valerian tea or taking the liquid would be the quickest way to relax and rest because it gets into the system quicker. Women who are pregnant and anyone with liver problems should not take Valerian root at all.

Valerian Root Side Effects …

Even though Valerian root comes from a natural plant, and there can be some side effects if you take too much, take it at the wrong time of day, or your system disagrees with its powerful qualities. They are:

May have an interaction with depressive medicines, narcotics, opiates and others.

Stomach problems

Liver damage shown by signs of yellowing of the skin or stomach pain in the upper right section.

Allergic reactions have occurred after stopping Valerian root and they included a rash, hives itching, wheezing, difficulty breathing, and swelling of the mouth or throat.

Valerian root is not a narcotic or chemical, but natural plants do produce strong reactions and responses within the body. Use Valerian root, but don’t over use it, take breaks in your usage and always consult your doctor. They are not educated in herbs and natural remedies, but they can look up any side effects that relate to your individual use.

If you’d like to more about Valerian Root then check out my other post on <a

It is vital to understand a bit more about this herb before starting on a daily regimen.

The name of this herb comes from the English language. St. John was used because the herb bloomed around June 24 each year; this was the day on which St. John the Baptist’s birthday was celebrated. Wort was the Old English word for plant.

This plant is a perennial with yellow blooms. Although it is mostly known as a natural remedy, it is known as a noxious weed in some areas of the world. St. John’s Wort has the tendency to spread quickly and overtake other plant growth. If left to grow unheeded, it can quickly take over much farm and pastureland. Animals feeding on it may develop nervous system depression, spontaneous abortion and even death. It mostly grows in temperate and subtropical areas in parts of Asia and North America.

This herb can be purchased in dried, liquid and capsule forms. The dried blossoms are used for teas. Liquids provide a diluted concentration of the herb. They also compose the essential oils and creams. However, capsules are by far the most common form and can be found at most drug, grocery or online stores that sell other homeopathic remedies. St. John’s Wort is usually standardized into an extract called hypericin or hyperforin.

This herb is most often used to treat depression and has properties similar to some prescription drug formulations for antidepressants. Other psychological symptoms that have improved with this medication are anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder. It has also been used for centuries on skin disorders or for nerve pain. Researchers continue to study the possibilities of its use for halting the progress of AIDS as well as for treating a number of other psychosomatic disorders.

St Johns Wort Side Effects are few, but worth noting…

St Johns Wort side effects are generally mild but have been found to affect some individuals profoundly. One of the most common problems is stomach upset. This could include nausea, diarrhea or other common gastrointestinal problems.

Certain psychological symptoms can occur in some people. Examples include restlessness, agitation and dizziness. The individual should consult his physician if any of these St Johns Wort side effects occur or worsen.

This herb usually make an individual’s skin and eyes extremely sensitive to the light. This can result in sunburn, rashes or visual changes. One should be especially careful to apply sunscreen over his entire face and body and to wear sunglasses whenever he is outside.

As with any other kind of over the counter supplement, one should check with his doctor before starting new medications or natural remedies. Physicians should also be made aware of other natural supplements that the patient is on since many of them can interact with prescription medications. The individual should also notify his physician immediately if he notices any potential side effects from his supplements or medications.

<br

Severe anxiety can often be an incredibly debilitating condition and may drastically impair one’s overall well-being. Fortunately, one step that can be taken in order to help combat anxiety is the consumption of the plant Winter Cherry. Also known as Ashwagandha, Indian ginseng, Ajagandha, Kanaje Hindi, Amukkara in Tamil, and Samm Al Ferakh, Winter Cherry is a natural treatment that was originally used in India centuries ago and became a staple of Ayurvedic medicine in order to treat anxiety.

Winter Cherry is a completely natural compound that is derived from the Withania somnifera plant, which grows only in very dry regions such as India. In order to prepare Withania somnifera, the plant must be grown at a very specific time of the year during times in which rain fall is not too high. Once the Withania somnifera plant has been grown, the flowers are discarded from the plant and the tuberous roots are extracted in order to obtain the portion that is used for medicinal purposes.

In general, most people who choose to supplement with Winter Cherry in order to combat anxiety do so in capsule form. Not only can this supplement be found in capsule form, however, but it is also possible to purchase Winter Cherry tea as well, which is likely equally as effective as the capsules. In most cases, consuming anywhere from 50 mg to 250 mg per day is typically the recommended dosage. Although side effects are incredibly rare, some people have reported experiencing an upset stomach after its consumption. Because the plant is not dangerous in any way, the product is allowed to be sold by the FDA. In order to maximize safety, however, it is recommended that those who are pregnant or who are taking prescription monoamine oxidase inhibitors avoid the consumption of Withania somnifera. Those who wish to take advantage of the effects of this plant can likely find it at a local supplement store.

While some people may doubt whether or not Winter Cherry can truly be effective at combating anxiety, the truth is that there is ample research to support its use. According to a study in the journal “Neurochemical Research”, Withania somnifera has extremely neuroprotective effects and can be highly beneficial for those who suffer from stress or anxiety related disorders. Clearly, the efficacy of this plant is not simply a myth but has actually been demonstrated in peer-reviewed scientific journals.

Although anxiety can be an incredibly debilitating condition, clearly steps can be taken in order to mitigate its effects. Simply by consuming Winter Cherry supplements, or even drinking Winter Cherry Tea, victims of anxiety can greatly reduce its symptoms. For those who are forced to endure such a devastating ailment, deciding to consume Winter Cherry daily may be the best decision you’ve ever made.’

Back to How to Use Rhodiola Rosea To Help Fight Anxiety and Depression

In today’s fast-paced world, one of the most significant health threats that many people are forced to endure is chronic depression. Chronic depression can be incredibly detrimental to your well-being and, if left unchecked, canwreak havoc on your health. Fortunately, one way to help combat depression and anxiety is through the use of Rhodiola Rosea. Also known as Golden Root, Roseroot, and Aaron’s Rod, Rhodiola Rosea is a medicinal herb that was originally discovered centuries ago in Siberia and consumed in order to help cope with the cold climate and stressful life.

Today, because the herb has such profound relaxing effects on the central nervous system, Rhodiola Rosea has become a very popular treatment for ailments such as anxiety and depression.

Rhodiola Rosea is a natural plant in the Crassulaceae family and typically grows in very cold regions of the world such as the Arctic. In order to prepare Rhodiola Rosea for consumption, extracts of the herb are taken and made into capsules or tablets. These capsules or tablets are then typically tested for their rosavin and salidroside content, as these are two of the chemicals that are believed to contribute to Rhodiola’s powerful effects on the body.

The amount of Rhodiola extract used in pills will then be modified to ensure a 3:1 ratio between rosavins and salidrosides, as this is the naturally occurring ratio found in nature and is believed to be most effective. In order to get the most out of Rhodiola Rosea, it is essential to adhere to an intelligent dosing regimen. In general, a typical dosing regimen consists of consuming 200 mg at three different times of the day.

One potential side effect that some people have experienced from the consumption of Rhodiola Rosea is difficulty falling asleep if taken immediately before bedtime. In order to prevent this, it is recommended that you do not take Rhodiola within the hour preceding your bedtime to ensure that sleep is not impaired.

For those who wish to purchase Rhodiola, the herb does not require a prescription and can commonly be found at local supplement stores. Because the herb is not dangerous and has ample research to support its use, Rhodiola Rosea is allowed by the FDA to be sold and marketed with moderate health claims. In the past, many people may have questioned whether or not an obscure herb from the Arctic could actually produce favorable results in those suffering from anxiety and depression. Fortunately, research in the “Nordic Journal of Psychiatry” has clearly demonstrated that subjects with depression who consumed a Rhodiola Rosea supplement demonstrated significantly improved symptoms compared to those who were given a placebo. Clearly, for those who suffer from such devastating conditions as chronic depression or anxiety, the supplementation of Rhodiola Rosea is a safe and effective method for helping you recover from these ailments.

Back to <a

After the invention of common anti-depressants, the use waned, but as the push to all things healthy has emerged, many are looking at it as a natural alternative. However, weighing the positives and negatives are wise decisions when looking into this as a treatment to anxiety.

While traditionally grown in Europe, the plant is classified as a weed, and has become cultivated in numerous locations, including South and North America. When the plant matures, the flowers are harvested and allowed to dry in the sun or other hot dry place, and the dust from the grinding is then converted to a pill. It can also be supplied as an oil, in which the process of infusing the plant in another oil, typically Olive Oil until it is mixed.

The recommended dosage for treating anxiety and depression is one 300mg pill three times a day, for a total of 900mg a day, and it is available at a variety of stores, including superstores, natural food stores, on-line and as dietary supplement on the shelves of many pharmaceutical stores. It will not be found as a medication as it is not FDA approved to be marketed as such in the United Stated.

There are many positives to the use of the herb. It has indeed been reported to treat mild depression and anxiety, and is considered all natural if this is a concern for many who are on a holistic path. It has a very minimal side effect profile, with nausea and GI upset being reported rarely in the beginning of treatment. It is also much less expensive that currently marketed anti-depressant medications.

Since St. John’s Wort is not regulated by the FDA, however, it leaves some room for uncertainty. Ingredients do not have to be thoroughly listed, nor do warnings commonly appear on the packages, specifically in regards to this treatment with anti-depressant drugs. Lack of testing can provide some ambiguity about long term health effects, though there have been no reports of harmful long term side effects. Caution must be made to read the label to ensure the consumer is getting the actual dosage, rather than a lower concentration with a substitute.

Many who have taken the herb have reported an enhanced mood when used to treat mild symptoms. It should be stressed, however, that for serious mood disorders and other illnesses it may not be sufficient for management of all
symptoms. It remains important to see a physician and report that it is being taken, especially in conjunction with other medication. It should never be taken with an anti-depressant as it can cause an overload of active ingredient and damage the brain.

For years, St. John’s Wort has been indicated in the treatment of mild mood disturbances, and while testing has been scarce, this is a trend that has been changing as more people have turned to it instead of modern medicine for depression.

Back to <a

The use of

valerian root for anxiety and insomnia was also popular in 16th century Europe, where the hardy perennial flowering plant grows. The plant blossoms with pink or white flowers in the summer months and also grows in parts of Asia and now has been introduced to North America. Also called setwall, the Valeriana officinalis is the most common of the many species of the plant used in natural medicine.

The valerian plant has also been used in ayurveda, India’s traditional medicine, since 200 A.D. With the return of homeopathic medicine, many have tried valerian root for anxiety, depression, stress and a non-habit forming sedative. The calming effect of the plants has also been reported to help with nervous tension, arthritis and digestive issues. For use as a dietary supplement, the roots and stems of the plant can be prepared in a variety of styles for ingestion.

How Valerian Root Is Prepared for Consumption

The root and underground stems of the plant, as well as the above ground stems, are dried and ground to be used as a tea, tincture, liquid extract, capsules and tablets. The tea and capsules usually contain the actual plant. Health food stores often give customers the option of valerian supplements from regular farms or organically grown options. Chemists can also extract the essence of the plants properties for use as a tincture or tablet. Like many supplements, different crops will vary in strength of the medicinal elements so some manufacturers offer “standardized” doses that stabilize the content.

How Valerian Root Works

Although health practitioners do not yet know exactly what active element gives valerian root its calming properties, some researchers point to the plants compounds interacting with the GABA neurotransmitter receptors. Much like prescription barbiturates, the valerian root supplement can calm the nerves and help users fall asleep. In some cases, the supplement has been used as an anticonvulsant for epilepsy.

Valerian Root Dosages and Possible Side Effects

The dosage for using valerian root for anxiety can vary from 50 to 150 mg three times a day in any of the available forms: capsule, extract or tea. For help with insomnia, a larger dose from valerian tea (300-600mg) can be taken an hour before bedtime. A health practitioner or nutritionist can make a specific recommendation based on individual symptoms. There are only rare instances of side effects from valerian root but some have reported headache, upset stomach, lightheadedness and daytime drowsiness. Since valerian does have an effect on the brain and central nervous symptom, it can interact with a variety of prescription medications such as barbiturates, SSRI medications, codeine and even cold medicine. The supplement may also have an effect on medications used for allergies, cholesterol and some cancer medications. Patients should always consult with their physician before trying valerian root for anxiety, depression or insomnia.

Valerian has been approved for use as a food by the Food and Drug Administration, like many dietary supplements, but valerian has not been evaluated or approved as a drug treatment. The FDA has listed Valerian as “generally regarded as safe,” but young children, pregnant or nursing women should not use the supplement.

Back to <a

One of the better natural treatments is Passion Flower. Passion Flower has been used for hundreds of years by Native Americans for symptoms of pain and insomnia. Today, Passion Flower can also be used to alleviate the symptoms of panic attacks, stress or nervousness.

It also happens to be a very safe alternative to prescribed drugs. The FDA considers Passion Flower to be GRAS, or generally known as safe. Overdose or reactions are rare, however, it is recommended that adults ingest no more than 200 mg per day. Grown in tropical regions and typically found on a woody hard vine and produces a fruit similar to a berry. It is commonly dried, mixed with herbs like Valerian, and drank in a soothing tea. It can also be made into caplets for ingestion.

It is believed that the Flavanoids like Vitexin and Chrysin that are found in the plant actually act as a sedative deep in the nervous system. One of the benefits of taking Passion Flower is that it does not cause drowsiness, so it can be taken during the day or while working. Instead, the Passion Flower helps achieve a natural mood balance.

Because the Passion Flower and other alternative medicines are growing in popularity, it can be purchased in many different places. Local health food stores and larger organic grocers carry it in both tea form and caplets. It can also be found at drug store chains like Walgreens or CVS in the supplement section of the pharmacy. Amazon.com has Passion Flower for sale, as do many other websites. Just be sure you are purchasing from a reputable source so that you are getting pure and natural Passion Flower.

Back to <a
